We love this train! My son is a lego enthusiast and a train enthusiast, so this is great for him. His is six, but with a bit of help, was able to build the whole set. More track is a MUST! We like the ability to be creative - to change the track every time we build it. You have to have more track for that. The remote control has worked great. Be sure you push the forward button more that one time. We were pushing it only once, and it was going so slow, we were disappointed. But then we learned that if you push it multiple times, the speed increases - in fact, the train flies around the track! Amazing! This wasn't in the instructions.

I have been collecting Lego trains for nearly thirty years now, and I have to say that this model holds the same magic that that original train thirty years ago held for me. There are certainly improvements in the system, and the way it is powered has changed somewhat, but it still has the same basics.

One thing to note is that the tracks are not compatible with the tracks from the first era of trains, so if you have the old blue tracks you do have to do some funky things in order to combine the two systems together. The trains, however, do fit in the same gauge so if you have a train from one system it work fine on the tracks from the other system.

This is apparently the end of this generation of Lego train, and a new generation is going to be introduced sometime in the next year or two. Apparently the tracks will still be compatible, which is very good news.

Lego delisted this set in late 2009. This set and #7897 were the of the "RC" generation of trains. The prior generation was the 9 volt series which used electrified track. The next (and current) generation is the Power Functions (PF) series which uses updated components (a new motor and new infrared signaling devices). The battery compartment and infrared receiver of the RC generation is a single, large unit; this is unique to 7897 and 7898. Battery power comes from AA batteries. It is not out of the question to modify the old trains with PF elements (to varying degrees of elegance). 9 volt, RC and PF all use the same gauge track, but the 9 volt track is electrified (RC and PF can still use it). Lego still calls its track "RC."

This set is modeled in the style of a small European cargo train. The set has fantastic playability. It includes an engine (most similar to a Deutsche Bahn Class E44), a crane car, a flat car, box car, hopper, small freight truck, forklift, red... Read more
