Just so you know, I'm a parent who loved Lego when I was a kid, and then rediscovered it with my kids. We generally like Lego trains and I have not had reason to speak ill of them. But this really IS a special set.

This is Lego's deluxe starter set. The train is nicely crafted and the set has a ton of playability. The engine is a European-style, yellow and gray, electric freight engine. The rolling stock includes a flat car, tank car and container car. The set also has a red full-length container, a yellow half-length container, two small automobiles (that load onto the flat car), green container gantry, a semi with container trailer, and four mini-figures. It includes 8 pieces of straight track, 16 curved, two switches, and 16 pieces of flex track. It also has all the necessary Power Function (PF) accessories (motor, infrared control, and battery box). The battery box is a new part; it holds six AAA batteries and sits inside the engine. If you don't like changing out... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Lego Train, December 31, 2010
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
This is a great train. I purchased it for Christmas for my 7 and 10 year old and they love it. They have played with it non-stop since we gave it to them. It is much better than I throught it would be. Very fast and durable. I look forward to adding onto the train set and buying some more sets.

As owning multiple older LEGO train sets, I wanted to get this newest freight line and was initially a bit shocked at the price tag. Regardless, I saved part of my budget for the month and splurged on this set and am really glad that I did.
The Good:
The design of the loco is very Euro-like; similar to electric locos I have seen in Germany, Austria, etc.
The cars all have a fair amount of detail, and it all helps to add to a reaslistic set.
The semi and crane are neat, and typically something you always need to buy as an accessory train set in years past.
The power functions work well, have a nicely disguised on/off switch, and the train has very nice speed and power. Think Z06 'vette for a LEGO train.
Track - and LOTS of it conmes with this set! I am used to the little oval with 16 curves and 2 or maybe 4 straight sections. This set has what seems to be twice the track. Many more options for layouts.
The not "as" good:
There are what seem to be... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Lego's 2011 cargo train, July 26, 2011

I am the nut-job parent that you'll see in some of the other train reviews. I grew up with Lego and returned to it when I had kids. Obviously I am terribly partial to Lego (ignore my star rating), but I'll give you the best review I can so that you can make the decision that is right for your kids. I do not receive free sets or compensation for my Lego reviews. This set began trickling into U.S. stores in early July, 2011.

A tidy and nicely designed set, 3677 includes a heavy switching engine (similar to a Deutsche Bundesbahn Class 290 diesel locomotive), a small green and white hazardous waste boxcar (with a pallet of lime green barrels), tipping ballast car, and maintenance-of-way (MOW) flatcar (which has a small cab, MOW truck, small crane and pallet). The MOW truck has flip-down rail wheels. There is also a trackside conveyor belt loader for the ballast, a trackside hopper, and four mini-figures.

The set includes all the necessary Power Function parts... Read more

We got this for our 6yr old for Christmas and left it in the box for him to assemble. He was able to do so over time with only a few corrections along the way! He assembled the engine first, which he could play with right away. Then the other cars and buildings were put together over the next few days. Each one took under an hour for our novice lego builder. The train runs great and my son loves driving it. The track is easy to assemble and holds together very well.

We ordered the light kit to add on based on some other reviews. With no instructions for incorporating the lights, our current implementation has some wires hanging out, but that's the way my son likes it so it's fine. (My husband used some additional lego pieces we had to hide the wires and add the lights to look more correct to us, but that was not the way it was allowed to stay - haha!)

It's impressive the amount of detail that each train car and the conveyer belt incorporate. We've shown off... Read more

This train is my son's 3rd, and although a little pricey(probably due to power functions) it is a great addition to my son's collection of 2 other Lego trains, The Emerald Night and Cargo train. Although it was rated up to 12 years, and it didn't take my son, 14 years old, as long to build it as the others, he was sufficiently challenged, but did not need my help at all. It is much faster than the Cargo train, and he has enjoyed it alot.
